Tax File Number

Tax File Number

Everyone needs a TFN (Tax File Number) particularly when you start work. Once you have a TFN – it lasts for as long as you do (ie. you have it for life).

If you don’t have a TFN then half your wages could be taken in tax! You don’t want that to happen!

PLEASE NOTE: The process for students to apply for a TFN changed at the end of 2014.

You apply for your TFN online & then verify your application by visiting Australia Post – you will need to have some identifying documents as part of your application (eg. birth certificate, Medicare no etc).

Birth Certificate

Not everyone can put their hands on their birth certificate, luckily you can order another copy. Search for ‘births, deaths and marriages‘ in the State you were born in. (Yes, I know you were born naked, but whereabouts? Victoria, NSW etc!!) .

Follow the instructions on the following websites (there are costs involved).

If you are a permanent migrant or temporary visitor, you too will need a TFN. Go to the relevant page at the TFN website.
