Defence Force – Our top tips to get in…

defence

We (Careers Advisors) see students make the same ol’ mistakes over & over, when they try to join the Defence Force….

To help YOU, here our our top tips….

Talk…

Take every opportunity to talk to defence personnel, don’t hang back, they can give you some red-hot clues on how to get in.

Research…

Research the Defence Force web site, they will want to know what JOB you want to do. There are almost as many jobs in the Defence Force as there are in Civilian life! If you haven’t done your research, by the time you get to an interview, they will know! Doesn’t look good!

Fitness…

You can’t increase your fitness levels by thinking about it (although that would be kinda cool) – you have to get up off your butt and train hard! If you don’t pass your fitness test, you won’t get in, simple!

Health…

At your initial training you will be expected to carry heavy packs, run, swim, climb ropes, run, shoot, crawl through mud, PT (Physical Training), then run some more. If you have had an injury, or surgery which will hold you back, then this will be looked at as part of your entry process. The Defence Force don’t need, or want to carry people with physical weaknesses.

Color Blindness….

Will exclude you from some jobs… make sure you understand this…

Asthma…

As for ‘Fitness’ above, your Asthma has to stand up to a lot of physical activity in a heap of different environments. Severe asthmatics will not be accepted.

Know their business…

You do understand what the Defence Force is all about don’t you? At your psychological exam, they will ask you about this. Make sure you know, and are 100% comfortable with the core business of the Forces.

School Reports…

  • Yes, they will want to see them – even though you have lost them. Contact your school for a copy!
  • You don’t have to be a rocket scientist, but they like to see in your reports that you ‘have a go’.
  • They also like to see that you have tried work experience in a field which interests you.
  • They like to see a C average in both Maths and English (minimum)

Mobile Phones / Emails…

Always have credit, and notify them if you change mobile numbers or email addresses. I can’t tell you how many times students miss entry into the Defence Force because of this simple issue. Dah!
